MOC Associates, Inc. helps nonprofit organizations find the optimal path to achieve their mission, position themselves strategically in the marketplace, and secure the resources they need.
Maureen O’Connor, president and principal of MOC Associates, has consulted with nonprofits for more than 20 years. Her work focuses on several areas—all driven by an organization’s unique opportunities.
Grants are a common area where nonprofits lack in-house capacity—from major government grants and complex collaborations, to proposals for new initiatives, to periodic deadline crunches or tune-ups that ensure materials are competitive and prospect research is complete. Maureen offers a full range of grants work:
>>Quickly masters the grant-seeking organization, its competitive advantages, existing and planned programs, and the issues they address;
>>Researches and prioritizes prospective funders—foundations, corporations, local/state/federal government agencies;
>>Develops strategies to approach each prospect, from aligning with their interests to seeking connections to initiate and build relationships;
>>Gathers raw material for proposal development, from interviewing staff to researching issues in specialized and mainstream sources;
>>Creates highly competitive grant materials that stand out amid growing demand for limited funding, including clear budgets and other financials;
>>Takes on post-grant stewardship and reporting, grants management and calendars, and more.
Strategic planning involves an organization’s stakeholders in discovering and determining how to pursue the organization’s best opportunities to achieve its mission. Based on each client’s needs, Maureen designs a strategic planning process that may include conducting research, engaging and soliciting input from stakeholders, compiling and analyzing data, revisiting the mission/vision/values, facilitating planning sessions, structuring and developing the plan document, and preparing the organization for successful implementation.
Resource development planning focuses on an organization’s funding opportunities in different areas—individual giving, institutional giving (e.g., grants from foundations, corporations, government), earned income, social enterprises, and more. Maureen assesses the organization’s current fund development efforts, engages current and prospective donors in identifying opportunities and strategies, and lays out a step-by-step, multi-year plan with clear roles for staff, board members, and other stakeholders. She also supports implementation by coaching staff and board members, developing basic materials, etc.
Occasionally, Maureen partners with associates who offer specialized skills for a specific project, always in consultation with the client.
